Tourists and Visitors
Planning a visit to Canada? Generally, admission to Canada is granted to visitors for a period of six months, provided they can demonstrate they are a genuine visitor or tourist.
In assessing whether to grant an applicant admission to Canada as a visitor, Canadian immigration authorities consider the reasons for visiting, whether the visitor has enough money to pay for the visit and whether he or she is likely to return to his or her home country.
Individuals applying for a visitor’s visa often require an invitation from a Canadian individual or business to support their visa application.
Once in Canada, visitors may apply to extend their stay if they would like to remain in Canada for longer than originally planned or for a period longer than the one for which they were initially approved. Justification for an extension is required.
Spouses and common-law partners of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are usually permitted to remain in Canada for longer than six months while their permanent residence (sponsorship) application is in process.
